‘Lucius´ Bite’ (Family of Misfits #1) by @K-Lee Klein #LGBT #Review

Tanja & Bethany reviews ‘Lucius’ Bite’ (Family of Misfits #1) by K-lee Klein. ( This book was released by MLR Press on June 21, 2012, 175 pgs )

Why Tanja read this book: I can not say it often enough: I love shifter stories <3! Here we not only have shifters but also witches and other supernatural beings and the combination of it drew me to this story.

This book was offered to RGR in exchange for an honest review, thank you K-Lee Klein.

Why Bethany read this book:

I had just finished K-lees book Tabby’s Pride which I loved so I couldn’t wait to see what she had is store for her misfits.

One bite has never been a life changing decision but it is now — to bite or not to bite that is the question.

All Lucius needs is his family. They might be a mismatched and unconventional group but they’re the only “real” family he knows and wants. What Lucius doesn’t need is the strange, beautiful man who arrives as a last minute dinner guest and knocks him and his wolf on his ass, literally.

Just being in the same room with the mysterious Nicu proves disastrous. Lucius knows without a doubt he doesn’t need the havoc Nicu threatens to bring to his predictable, but comfortable existence. But when he stands to lose the man who is tearing his life apart, Lucius realizes he doesn’t know what he needs at all.

Tanja’s thoughts:

Lucius lives in a mismatched family with “Mama Bear” Ali, a white witch and two shifters Kristof and Manny. In his world that´s all he needs and definitely not a spirit mate. So when Nicu comes knocking on their door Lucius is not pleased at all to find his mate. To top that Nicu is human, a Romanian gypsy but nonetheless just human. That´s not something Lucius can tolerate well, in short he doesn´t want to know his mate.

I liked the angle this author took on the mate aspect. A spiritual mate, which can but doesn’t have to be your love as well as what could happen if a person rejects his/her mate. But that was also the problem I had with it. This story was so focused on the what can happen part and the intimate moments between the main characters. I missed some normal time, a little get to know each other and more background information about Nicu and Lucius. So it felt sometimes too flat and left a few questions unanswered for me.

The secondary characters were interesting. You got to see a few bits and pieces about their pasts and that was quite intriguing. In itself that´s not a problem but in this case my focus shifted to the secondary characters a lot and I wanted to know more about them while reading the book…sometimes more than I was interested in what was going on with Lucius and Nicu. Nonetheless Lucius and Nicu were very likeable characters, who had a lot of growing up to do and also had great chemistry together.

Overall this was a light read, not much angst but with a lot of humour in it. I liked it and look forward to book two, which is Ali´s story.

Bethany’s thoughts:

So I had JUST finished Tabby’s pride and was in a shifter kinda mood.  What I got was so much better that your typical shifter book.  And what I got shocked me.  Why you ask?  Well after reading many, MANY shifter books, they all tend to read the same.  So its really hard to find a truly unique shifter book.  Well this it.  There is no pack politics, cause Ali “Mamma” has taken in misfits and made them a family. Its not just wolf shifters, we have bear shifter, a lion shifter, and if that were not enough there is a witch thrown in for good measure.  Perfection.

Lucius knows about spirit mates and he does NOT want one.  Yet he gets him anyway, like it or not.  Nicu knows that Lucius is his mate but knows that getting Lucius to accept him is going to be a tough road ahead.  You can feel the chemistry they share and watching Lucius fight it leaves you shaking your head wondering why he just won’t accept Nicu.  Yet when I found out why Lucius was so against claiming his mate, it all fell into place for me.  When he finally does, you will find your self rooting for them to have their HEA.

I fell in love with the other “misfits” as well.  Together they have made their family, not the one they were born into but the one they created.  The first chapter alone had me laughing so hard.  You can tell they love each other and take care of their own.  So if your looking for something outside of the “norm” shifter book get this one.  When I finished this one I couldn’t wait to read Ali’s story.
