Why I read this book:
I am a HUGE Taylor V. Donovan fan so when we were offered a copy in exchange for our honest opinion I jumped at the chance to read and review it.
Senior associate attorney Derrick Swain wants it all: a loving husband, a fulfilling career, and a couple of kids. After years of hard work he’s on the fast track to a promotion. He’s also met the man of his dreams. A week of daily lunch meetings in Central Park provides the perfect setting to get to know him better, and Derrick thinks it won’t be long before they take the next step and go on a date. But instead of asking him out, the object of his affection stops showing up without explanation, leaving him to wonder what went wrong.
As part owner of one of the most prestigious law firms in New York City, Roman Bradford knows that professional success isn’t the be all end all. Although he’s been lucky in life, true love has eluded him for the most part. One too many failed relationships have caused him to be leery of trying again, until he meets a man that can only be described as temptation personified. A few conversations is all it takes for Roman to start believing things will be different this time around. It doesn’t matter that they are boss and employee, or that he’s feeling too much, too fast. Not when he can see the same emotions in Derrick’s eyes. Then life turns on a dime, and Roman has no option but to let his chance at happiness go.
A battle of wills ensues when a life-altering case brings them together a year later. Roman wants to do the right thing by not letting anything happen between them, and Derrick is determined to prove they’re meant to be together. Evidence will be presented and final arguments will be made. Will they be able to come to an agreement, or will they opt to have their potential relationship dismissed?
Like I said before, I am a huge Taylor fan. Love her Degrees series and Disasterology 101 and how different they are. So I could not wait to get to this one, but after reading a few reviews I was worried I might not like it as much. Well slap me on the hand, cause WOW was I wrong. I don’t know why I doubted, cause without fail she knows how to write a book that sucks you in and won’t let go till the end. So much so that the kids probably got to watch more TV than usual. But you know what it was well worth it.
Without fail her characters are wonderful, well written, flawed people that you can relate to. They are real, they hurt and they love, and you can FEEL that hurt and that love. Once again she delivers the angst, the kind of angst that will leave you with a book hangover. I loved Derrick and what it took to get him to where he is today. He struggled to make himself a man he is proud of, the kind of man you want to know. He is loyal and loving and all he wants is for someone to love him as much as he would love them. And Roman, oh my sweet, wonderful, stoic Roman. He want Derrick, he loves Derrick, heck he knew that from the beginning. But he also wants what is best for Roman and he thinks the only way that he can do that is to stay away from Derrick. And while Roman struggles to push Derrick away, Derrick struggles to get them closer.
After a LOT of pushing from his friends and a little jealousy on his own part, Roman comes clean to Derrick. I loved how Derrick handled this realization of what Roman was keeping from him. This shows his strength and his determination. There were times when I wanted to yell at Roman for keeping this a secret for so long. That was time he could have been with Derrick building a life together. But knowing that this is just book one of three, I realized it actually works really well. It is a natural progression that sets the stage for book two. Which I hope we get soon cause I for one am hooked. Another Taylor book that I will be rereading and raving about to anyone that will listen.
Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage.
