Tanja´s review of ‘Sweet Giordan, Please Remember (Hearts in Reverie #1)’ by Raine O’Tierney (Published by Dreamspinner Press; March 18, 2014)

Why I read it: I could not withstand a story with an amnesic person and see where his story will lead me. It was beautiful to read.

This book was given to RGR free of charge for the purpose of an honest review.

Sweet Giordan, please remember

Giordan Stone is lucky, all things considered. Sure, he spent five years in a coma only to wake with a right leg that’s practically useless and no memories other than his name. But now he’s under the care of sassy southern surrogate mother, Chloe Devereaux, spending his days painting and healing. Giordan wants for nothing at all… until he looks out the window one morning and sees Chloe’s gorgeous son, Shane, standing there. Something very familiar stirs in Giordan.

When he sketches, Giordan is able to go into an “art trance” where pieces of disjointed memory come back to him without time or place. More and more of these flashes are of Shane Devereaux and the intense, intimate experiences they shared together. Even though Shane keeps his distance now, Giordan is convinced his flashes are real. But he doesn’t have the whole story. Giordan is determined to fill in his memory blanks and convince Shane his feelings are genuine.

My thoughts:

Do you know that: You walk a long the street and suddenly there is a smell…you know it, remember clearly smelling it somewhere and connect it with a person and/or a feeling….but you just can´t place a time or place to it. You there with me….yes? Then welcome to Giordon Stone´s life.

After a horrible accident Giordan was in a coma for five years. In that time nobody claimed him, knows him. He himself suffers from amnesia, only knowing his name and his profession. So when he was discharged he had nowhere to go. I seriously shudder to think something like that is possible-to turn a person away with no ID and therefore possibility to build a life.

Giordan his admitted to the hospital a second time and there somebody shows up and took him home. Chloe said she knows him, they share a past and she will from now on care for him. I loved her, she is an awesome person who you want to have as a mother. Chloe helps Giordan getting better. She keeps him company, looks that he eats enough and trains with him so he can walk again. In all that time she didn´t put pressure on him to remember.

Giordan is so sweet, sometimes naïve and grieves for his loss of memory. The only times he can partially remember is when he draws. He is a brilliant artist and through his pictures he can speak what is buried deep in his mind. His pictures are beautiful. He draws what comes to mind, sometimes knowing that the things he draws did happen, not knowing when and where. Awesome, just awesome….I could feel those memories through the pictures it was so good described.

One day Giordan sees a man at Chloe´s house. It turned out to be Shane, Chloe´s son. Giordan feels that he knows Shane and that those two share a past. On some level he recognizes that he loves Shane but doesn´t remember anything about them as a couple. Slowly though bits and pieces comes to Giordan about his time with Shane.

Shane on the other hand keeps his distance. He just can´t deal with Giordan´s memory loss. His behaviour did make sense to me, although I wished he would give Giordan a chance. Shane has one wish, that Giordan remembers what happened on the day when he had that accident. Something Giordan can´t do because you can´t force what your mind is not willing to give. It´s a hard way Giordan takes, he learns a lot about what he can and is willing to do.

All comes down to one event, when Giordan takes his art pieces and shows them to Shane. I can´t go into further details here without giving spoilers, but for me it was perfect. It all has a deeper meaning in the end, with a hopeful touch for the future. Don´t get me wrong here, you get your HEA.

So this story has some things in it which confused me. Also the possible answer of why Giordan was where he was, when he had that accident, was for me an absolutely logical conclusion. Why hadn´t Chloe or Shane thought of that possibility before? That did not make sense to me.

Anyway I loved that story, never read something like it before. It was beautiful to watch Giordan speak through his pictures and the ending left tears in my eyes….I was that touched by it. Recommended!!!
