Tanja reviews Dare To Love Forever (New Vampire Justice #1) by JC Wallace (Published by Amber Quill Press; June 30, 2014)
Why I read this: Vampires are my secret love of paranormal books, beside shifters. So I just couldn´t resist reading this story and I was not disappointed :). This book was offered by the author, free of charge in exchange for an honest review.
Carson Locke is a Tabula Rosa vampire–a dangerous rarity in the world of vampires. With one bite, he can wipe clean a vampire’s mind, creating a mindless drone. Because of this, Carson has spent his entire twenty-three years sheltered at home. That changes, however, when his entire family is murdered.
On the run and near death, Carson meets Commander Lincoln Samuels, a beautiful vampire who tries to heal him. In doing so, Carson is bonded to Lincoln and turned into something the vampire world has never seen.
Lincoln is a Sanatore vampire with the ability to heal other vampires. He heads a team in the New Vampire Justice police force in Utica, NY. Late one night, he’s called to a local Vampire Blood Market where a starving Tabula Rosa vampire is about to be executed by one of his officers. Feeling a strong connection to Carson, Lincoln wants to heal the broken man despite knowing the risk in doing so–it could destroy Lincoln and cost him the chance to love again. And he soon discovers there’s a greater evil threatening to take Carson from him.
Can two vampires who have loved and painfully lost in the past learn to trust one another, defeat the evil rising against them, and dare to love forever?
This is the start of a very promising series. The author created a world here with a new angle on vampires, namely the various kinds which exists. Their abilities as well as the consequences which come with those skills were great to read about. I absolutely loved it.
I really liked all characters in this story, even the bad ones. They are well fleshed out. Every one of them has a background which was more or less told. Of course the main focus is on Carson and Lincoln. Their back stories are heartbreaking and I rooted for them from the first moment.
Carson is a Tabula Rosa vampire but he is not only this. As the story progresses, he develops a lot of other skills beside him being able to clean a vampire´s mind with one bite. You get the chance, together with the characters, to explore Carson´s abilities. Nobody knows what Carson really is and I think those skills he already has are not all he can do. Would love to read more about that in the next book and see where this angle on Carson will lead us.
Carson and Lincoln….soooo good together. Yes, there is kind of insta-love here, but I can work with this because of the very interesting mate-bond.
Some things which bothered/annoyed me in this story were first the constant talking about an incident which happened four years prior to starting this novel to Lincoln. I really was frustrated that I had to wait so long to learn what that incident was. It felt drawn out and didn´t work for me that well. Due to this incident Lincoln was not sure how he should behave toward Carson. His evasive behaviour grated on my nerves. I wanted to shout at him to finally get over himself and talk with Carson about some things. Thankfully it did happen or I would have had to smack Lincoln over the head.
Nonetheless I really liked this story. You get heartbreak, action, passion and suspense. The part of who is behind all those bad things kept me glued to my kindle. Nothing is as it seemed, betrayals are involved. Some of them runs very deep others are not what they seemed to be. I´m now (im)patiently awaiting book two and hope this one will also focus more on the politics to get an additional sense of the world the author created.
9/10 pots of gold
JC Wallace started writing from a young age, but took a break for marriage, kids, and college (in that order). He recently rediscovered his passion and ventured out into the brave new world of publishing with his short, Waiting for Snow, and his first novel, Curiosity Killed Shaney. At night and on the weekends, JC writes about all things men, believing there is nothing hotter than two men finding and loving one another, whether for a night or forever. An avid reader of M/M romance, JC loves a good twist of a plot, HEA, HFN, or tragic ending. He also writes what his bestie calls HUNK (Happy Until the Next Kidnapping).
In his daytime hours, JC works with individuals with autism and behavior problems. He is owned by three kids, one grandchild and one on the way, two dogs and one cat. He lives in the beautiful Adirondack Mountains in Northern NY.
