Vinny, Porn Star by @JPBarnaby #LGBT #Review

Dana reviews Vinny, Porn Star (Working Boys, Book 3) by JP Barnaby. (Published by Wilde City Press, August 30, 2014, 59 pages)

Why I read this book: I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I have also reviewed the first two books in this series and wanted to continue reading and reviewing them. Link to Charlie, Rentboy review. Link to Andy, Go-Go Boy review.

Blurb: Vinny is just your typical all-around average guy, well, except for the leather and the floggers, oh and maybe that little room at the back of his house where he likes to take a guy and strap his ass before he before he nails him. Well, maybe Vinny isn’t so average. At least, that’s what Angel thinks. You see, Angel got himself into a bit of trouble by scheduling a fetish shoot with The Sounding Board when he’s never even been tied up.

Who better to show him the ropes than professional fetish model, Vinny D’Forino? The answer will bring him to his knees.

Don’t miss JP Barnaby’s other steaming hot Working Boy titles—Charlie, Rentboy and Andy, Go-Go Boy.

My thoughts: Vinny, Porn Star didn’t feel like the best title for this book. Though the main character does star in adult videos, his role in this story centered around training Angel, a newbie porn star, in the art of BDSM. Vinny is a Dom, who has sworn off love. I have never explored the world of BDSM, so I’m not an expert, but I would have expected Vinny to be extremely tough, but right away we are shown his compassionate tendencies. And also his need to separate himself from his subs when he’s done.

Angel is sort of a “fanboy” of Vinny’s. He is looking to star in his own BDSM videos and desperately wants to learn from his idol. For all his desire to be a sub, he seems to have a little bit of trouble actually following orders. His innocence is apparent to Vinny and the reader. Vinny could choose to punish the younger man for his hesitancy, but instead we are given another view of his compassion. Angel would prefer to stay with Vinny, but when Vinny lets him know that he’s merely training him and not available, Angel quits the learning process to star in his first film.

As I mentioned, I’m not an expert, but to me, I felt this book was a perfect example of a good dom/sub relationship. Minus the actual relationship. What I learned from the book was that though the dom enjoys being in control and the power is a turn on, his role is also to make the submissive happy. The submissive is supposed to feel good giving the power to the dom, being controlled. Though I’m not sure that Angel was ever comfortable being the sub, Vinny was a perfect dom. He made sure not to push Angel beyond his comfort zone. He took care of his submissive.

In the beginning, Vinny was definitely against falling in love and/or having a relationship after his heart was broken in the past. By the end, he has a change of heart and we are left with a HFN ending, it didn’t feel quite like a HEA. Due to the shorter length of this story, I admit that the ending felt abrupt. I was happy that Vinny changed his mind but I would have liked to have seen the character’s change up close in personal. Whether it was an internal debate, or an emotional moment that made him realize what he was giving up, I think it would have made the character feel even better developed. It was an enjoyable story, though and I recommend it.
