Jay Northcote gives us the lowdown on Nothing Ventured, with exclusive excerpt and giveaway!
Hi RGR followers, it’s great to be here today.
I’m here to tell you about my recent release, Nothing Ventured, and share a short exclusive excerpt from the book. I also have a backlist title to give away, so please make sure you comment to enter!
Nothing Ventured is a light, sexy novella about two guys who meet while they’re training for a race. The race is similar to Tough Guy or Tough Mudder, so they have to cross obstacles as well as running through mud. It’s another mostly feelgood read from me, without too much angst and drama. But of course it takes Matt and Aiden a little while to work out what they really want.
Nothing Ventured is the third title in my Nothing set of books. They’re not a series, although they’re linked by title. But they’re all similar reads. When I wrote them I was aiming for the sort of light read that will get you through a lazy Sunday morning, or an evening on the sofa: sexy, sweet books with a touch of humour that will leave you with a smile on your face. If you enjoyed either of my other titles in the set—Nothing Serious and Nothing Special—hopefully this one will hit the spot too.
When Aiden agrees to run the Mad Mucker—a twelve-mile muddy slog over an obstacle course—he’s expecting it to be a bit of a laugh. The training will be tough, but Aiden could use the motivation to regain some fitness.
Matt is the sexy cousin of one of Aiden’s coworkers and a last-minute addition to the team. When he agrees to train with Aiden, Aiden suddenly finds the prospect of regular workouts a lot more appealing.
Soon attraction flares, and they embark on an intense physical relationship. Matt doesn’t want to fall in love with a man, and Aiden doesn’t want to fall in love at all, but despite their insistence on no strings, they grow closer. As the day of the race approaches, time is running out for them to work out how they feel about each other.
As the evening progressed, Aiden started to wonder who was flirting with whom.
Aiden was definitely being the most obvious about it. As far as he was concerned, Matt had given him a clear signal he was okay with it—flattered even. But Aiden still couldn’t decide whether Matt was interested or merely enjoying the attention of a gay man. Some straight men were happy to be flirted with, but that was as far as it went. Being wanted by a gay guy stroked their egos and maybe even fueled their latent fantasies, but they went back to women for reality.
They did sets of abs exercises last, taking it in turns to use the only free mat. Matt made it look effortless as he raised his upper body off the mat, his hands behind his head revealing damp tufts of dark armpit hair. Aiden stood by his feet, stretching out his triceps as he watched. Matt’s face was set in a frown of concentration as he counted under his breath.“Six. Seven. Eight. Done.” He lay back on the mat and stretched his arms over his head, chest rising and falling with his breathing. Aiden tried not to imagine how he’d look stretched out on a bed with fewer clothes on and failed. Yeah, Matt would look fucking amazing underneath him.

Jay lives just outside Bristol in the West of England, with her husband, two children, and two cats.
She comes from a family of writers, but she always used to believe that the gene for fiction writing had passed her by. She spent years only ever writing emails, articles, or website content. One day, she decided to try and write a short story–just to see if she could–and found it rather addictive. She hasn’t stopped writing since.
