Visiting Bluewater Bay

LA Witt and I placed Bluewater Bay on the Olympic peninsula in Washington State. Now, I’m a European and generally feel a lot more comfortable writing about places I’ve actually been. While the internet has made research a breeze (and a vortex), nothing beats actually knowing what places look like. Now, my exposure to the United States has been very limited. I’ve been to Chicago (and know my way around the financial part of it, also a bit of the Gold Coast), and I’ve spent a few days each in conference hotels in Albuquerque and Atlanta. All that was either business or writing-related.

So I left all the descriptions and stuff to Lori—in all the books set in the area, and we have quite a few of those: Two Wilde’s novels (No Place That Far and No Distance left To Run), as well as Hostile Ground and now Lone Wolf. It started to feel increasingly like I should get to know the place a bit better so I can write about it with some authority.

Now with all the time on my hands without a conventional day job, Lori invited me to stay with her near Seattle. I jumped at that and so we ended up spending four weeks exploring the Olympic Peninsula, Seattle and every bookshop within driving distance. The only thing we didn’t manage was going to Portland for Powell’s. Hopefully next time.

In any case—I think we saddled the horse (aka, got in Lori’s truck) the moment I was coherent, and went all the way to Port Angeles and nearly to Forks, but we got sidetracked by a local telling us we should really visit Hurricane Ridge in the Olympic National Park, so that is what we did. (It was COLD up there, but we had a brilliant view, blue sky and we were pretty much the only people there. Also, Lori was befriended by ravens.)

During the trip we passed the area where we placed Bluewater Bay. There are several small towns along the coast, and we chuckled at local names such as Clearwater Bay and Clallam Bay. Clearly, Bluewater Bay wasn’t outlandish a name for the area.

For me, maybe the most impressive thing was the forest. I’ve rarely if ever been exposed to virgin forest that hasn’t been logged or cultured into submission. The moss hanging off the trees, all the undergrowth, the tall, tall trees and the mix of plants just had me staring out of the window in amazement and in an attempt to soak up as much as possible before returning to the much more civilised Kent in the UK.

In any case, just seeing all the space and the little roads going off into the forest, the type of houses out there, the air and mix of water and mountains made me feel like I understood Hunter Easton a whole lot more. He seems very much the type to seek out that kind of landscape and thrive there.
