‘Rack & Ruin’ (THIRDS #3) @CharlieCochet #LGBT #Review

Bethany and MtSnow review Rack & Ruin by Charlie Cochet, published by Dreamspinner Press on November 7th, 2014, 207 pages.

Why MtSnow read this:

Cliffhanger. Grrrrrr. Torture. Strung upside down by my toenails. And it just gets worse. And that cover? Another winner. Need I say more?

Why Bethany read this:

What MtSnow said.

New York City’s streets are more dangerous than ever with the leaderless Order of Adrasteia and the Ikelos Coalition, a newly immerged Therian group, at war. Innocent civilians are caught in the crossfire and although the THIRDS round up more and more members of the Order in the hopes of keeping the volatile group from reorganizing, the members of the Coalition continue to escape and wreak havoc in the name of vigilante justice.

Worse yet, someone inside the THIRDS has been feeding the Coalition information. It’s up to Destructive Delta to draw out the mole and put an end to the war before anyone else gets hurt. But to get the job done, the team will have to work through the aftereffects of the Therian Youth Center bombing. A skirmish with Coalition members leads Agent Dexter J. Daley to a shocking discovery and suddenly it becomes clear that the random violence isn’t so random. There’s more going on than Dex and Sloane originally believed, and their fiery partnership is put to the test. As the case takes an explosive turn, Dex and Sloane are in danger of losing more than their relationship.

MtSnow’s Review:
Okay. So I was onboard with each story leading into the next with each ‘non-ending’, but I gotta tell you. This one about tore me up. There was so much wrong with this one, but in a good, and intense, gut-wrenching way. Hard to believe each story can get better than the previous, but it does.

So. After the big reveal, and elimination of the villain in the previous book, you think we’d start getting resolution and some growth in Dex and Sloane’s relationship, right? Well, when you have a possible ‘traitor’ on your tight, be it somewhat small THIRDS team, how do you find time to even THINK about a relationship on the side? Everyone is under suspicion, and some good (or are they really BAD?) people get hurt. Emotionally AND physically. I mean, when is the team, or even us the reader, going to get a break?!

This book is shorter, which works since most of us that have read the previous books already are familiar with the personalities of the Therians AND the THIRDS and what they have to deal with as far as prejudice from humans. But, a lot more action is going on, and I was on the edge most of the story due to wondering who is being honest and real, and who is not. And why? And the bad guys in this story keep getting worse and more creative in their means of vindication. And explosions. Good grief! It’s like Lethal Weapon on crack.

The non-ending and break down of some important relationships in this book have me SO addicted and barely able to wait for the next episode. I want to see this on TV or as a movie series sooo bad! I love how the intensity keeps racking up for a big finale of some sort. As soon as you think things are moving forward toward resolution, BAM!, something else is thrown into the works.

We do still get some funny scenes with banter between Cael and his brother, and Cael and Ash, and some yummy sexy times between Dex and Sloane, and some more hilarity from Dex towards his teammates, but this story ends up letting us see a more dark and serious side to some of our favorite supporting cast as well. Just be ready for the ramp up.

Anyway, I recommend you stay tuned, and you don’t have to wait for the story on audio, even though I plan on getting it also, as soon as it’s available for release. Highly recommended book. Thank you so much for this series. I’m loving it!

pot of gold

Bethany’s Review:

This one is my favorite, yes I know I said that about book one and book two, but I was wrong.  This one is my ABSOLUTE favorite by far.  Let me see if I can explain why.

They have such a natural progression in each book.  We don’t get the whole meet, fall, in love, live happily ever after in book one.  I mean it is a series so what fun would that be.  Not saying I don’t like that in my standalone books, but I like when characters develop with the books.  Well Ms. Cochet has certainly done that here, not just with Dex and Sloan but with the entire cast.

Dex is just as funny as ever, but what I really loved with this one is we see a softer side to Sloan, a side that shows that progression that I mentioned above.  And well that just makes my insides melt.  The sexy times between Dex and Sloan are also better, mostly because of Sloan loosening up and letting himself really feel for Dex.  Swoon worthy!!!  Oh and Dex’s birthday party……just wow!!!

What we also see is trouble brewing between not just two of our team members but quite a few.  No I will not go into further detail about that because, that people is what you would call a spoiler.  And I don’t do spoilers, they upset me, and makes my OCD twitchy and no one wants that.  So my only suggestion is for you to READ.THIS.BOOK.

The ending, now the ending left me screaming at the top of my lungs while waiting in the car line to pick up my kids from school.  Believe me people that was NOT a pretty picture, I think people were worried for me.  It was by far the most, perfect, wonderful, brilliant, EVIL, cliffhanger EVER!!!!!!!  I am not so patiently waiting for book four.  Another winner Ms. Cochet.
