‘Scrap’ by @JosephineMyles #Interview #Giveaway #BlogTour

Today we have the pleasure to welcome the wonderful Josephine Myles.  Lets give her a big THANK YOU for stopping by and answering a few questions.Interview

  1. When you start a book do you have the whole story planned or does it build progressively?

I have the basic outline planned and will have blocked in a few key scenes, but there are plenty of blank scenes still left to fill. As I get going I gradually fill in those blanks, and by the time I’m about a third of the way through I generally know exactly what I’ll be writing in coming scenes. That said, I’m always happy to be surprised by unexpected developments. I hadn’t planned either of the bridge scenes in Scrap, but after visiting Clifton Suspension Bridge, I knew I had to set a scene there. It was too stunning a location to leave out. And the same goes for the swing bridge scene down on the docks. It gave a bit of local flavour.

  1. What is the hardest part of writing your book?

Making myself sit down and write. I’m the queen of procrastination and can always find something else that needs doing, like folding laundry or cleaning behind the radiators. But once I force myself to get started, it’s usually addictive and I wonder why I was so reluctant to knuckle down and write.

  1. Do your characters ever take over and make the story go somewhere you didn’t plan?

All the time! I look forward the characters bringing something new to the table. It shows they’re fully-realised, autonomous creations with minds of their own.

  1. What makes you want to write?

It’s often stray lines in newspaper articles. Things that make you wonder what happened behind the scenes. That said, most of my stories begin with a key scene—often a comic one—that I want to weave the story around. With Scrap, it was an image of Dare and Solly (his Rottweiler) standing outside his Airstream caravan in the middle of yard of broken down old VW campers.

  1. Where do you write?

On an ancient laptop which doesn’t have an internet connection (essential to stop me getting distracted online), on my sewing table. It’s the most peaceful place in the house and I like writing in a place that’s set aside for working. That said, now I have a baby to contend with, I imagine I’ll have to write all over the place if I hope to get anything done. Probably with a sleeping baby on my lap. And covered in baby sick. It’s a glamorous life!

  1. What is your all time favorite book?

It’s got to be either Wuthering Heights or Michael Ende’s Neverending Story. I could reread those two endlessly.

  1. eBooks or print?

I’m all for eBooks these days, although I do prefer print for reference books. I’m trying to declutter at the moment in preparation for moving house, and I’m so glad that these days I buy all my music and books electronically, and stream all my TV box sets. Print editions are gorgeous though, and I do love my collection of gay romance paperbacks signed by the authors!

  1. Heels or flats?

I love an excuse to wear heels, but I’m in flats most of the time. Actually, most of the time I’m in my sheepskin slipper boots. Best footwear investment I ever made!

  1.  If you had to do it all over again would you change anything in your first book?

If you’d asked me that a few years ago I’d have come up with all kinds of things I wanted to change after reading the reviews on Goodreads. But you know what? I don’t read reviews any more (except the ones I’ve requested), and I’m much more chilled out about what readers think. I will always pay attention to the feedback from my critique partners and my editor, but once the book is done, it’s done. So no, I think Barging In should stand as it is. It might not be perfect, but it was the best I could make it at the time. Dan and Robin will always have a special place in my heart.

When things come to a head, there’s nowhere to go but down…

The Bristol Collection, Book 3

On the surface, Derek “Call Me Dare” Nelson’s life is simple, doing up custom campervans while living in a slightly illegal caravan in his riverfront yard. When a handsome, smooth-talking developer offers to buy the land out from under his feet, Dare realizes it’s the same man he had to escort home from a party months ago for causing a drunken scene.

Grant Matravers lives a double life, attempting to adjust to weekends as a single, divorced gay man while staying closeted at work. The strain of keeping up the part-time pretense, missing his kids, and now a problematic attraction to the shave-headed, tattooed Dare, has worn his emotional barriers dangerously thin.

Dare blasts through those barriers in a way Grant isn’t prepared for, challenging everything he thought he knew about himself as a gay man. But as their chemistry heats up and the intimacy between them grows, Grant edges toward a decision that could blow up in his face. Exposing a hornet’s nest of complications that could destroy any chance for happily ever after.

Warning: Contains a man desperately in need of redemption, another with a chip on his shoulder the size of an oak tree, frotting in camper vans, a sensual head-shaving scene and several guest appearances from Mas.

English through and through, Josephine Myles is addicted to tea and busy cultivating a reputation for eccentricity. She writes gay erotica and romance, but finds the erotica keeps cuddling up to the romance, and the romance keeps corrupting the erotica. Jo blames her rebellious muse but he never listens to her anyway, no matter how much she threatens him with a big stick. She’s beginning to suspect he enjoys it.

Jo publishes regularly with Samhain, and her latest novel is the contemporary gay erotic romance, Scrap. She loves to be busy, and is currently having fun trying to work out how she is going to fit in her love of writing, dressmaking and attending cabaret shows in fabulous clothing around the demands of a new baby.

  1. Thanks for the interview. Your sheepskin slipper boots sound lovely. I have a pair of slipper mules that are like heaven on my feet. But it is hot here a lot so flip-flops are my most-worn footwear.

I recently read Scrap and really enjoyed it. It is a great series!

  4. This was a great interview. I love that you wouldn’t change Barging In, I adore that book. And your writing spot sounds lovely 😀 I have to admit I have never read Wuthering Heights, I started it but never finished. And DAMN I did not know The Neverending Story was a book first, I should have but I didn’t. I will have to find it because I love that movie 😀

  5. Thank you I enjoyed the interview 🙂 I have tried to disconnect the Internet when I am working from home, but it never works and I feel quite lost without it so back on it goes with less distraction than when it was off 🙂 I wonder, as I really enjoyed Barging In and as its one of the earliest books Jo wrote but would there ever be a sequel or catch up?

Thank you for the giveaway 🙂

Just a quick note Neverending Story was written by Michael Ende and he was upset by how much the first film deviated from his book, so you will find it different but there is so much more story to read and enjoy.

  6. Great interview. I know I;m not an author, but I try not to read reviews. I look at covers, read blurbs, and follow blog tours. I get a much better feel for the author and their works that way. Looking forward to reading this book. Have it on my wish/buy list
