Today we have the pleasure to welcome the wonderful Josephine Myles.  Lets give her a big THANK YOU for stopping by and answering a few questions.

1. When you start a book do you have the whole story planned or does it build progressively?

I have the basic outline planned and will have blocked in a few key scenes, but there are plenty of blank scenes still left to fill. As I get going I gradually fill in those blanks, and by the time I’m about a third of the way through I generally know exactly what I’ll be writing in coming scenes. That said, I’m always happy to be surprised by unexpected developments. I hadn’t planned either of the bridge scenes in Scrap, but after visiting Clifton Suspension Bridge, I knew I had to set a scene there. It was too stunning a location to leave out. And the same goes for the swing bridge scene down on the docks. It gave a bit of local flavour.

2. What is the hardest part of writing your book?

Making myself sit down and write. I’m the queen of procrastination and can always find something else that needs doing, like folding laundry or cleaning behind the radiators. But once I force myself to get started, it’s usually addictive and I wonder why I was so reluctant to knuckle down and write.

3. Do your characters ever take over and make the story go somewhere you didn’t plan?

All the time! I look forward the characters bringing something new to the table. It shows they’re fully-realised, autonomous creations with minds of their own.

4. What makes you want to write?

It’s often stray lines in newspaper articles. Things that make you wonder what happened behind the scenes. That said, most of my stories begin with a key scene—often a comic one—that I want to weave the story around. With Scrap, it was an image of Dare and Solly (his Rottweiler) standing outside his Airstream caravan in the middle of yard of broken down old VW campers.

5. Where do you write?

On an ancient laptop which doesn’t have an internet connection (essential to stop me getting distracted online), on my sewing table. It’s the most peaceful place in the house and I like writing in a place that’s set aside for working. That said, now I have a baby to contend with, I imagine I’ll have to write all over the place if I hope to get anything done. Probably with a sleeping baby on my lap. And covered in baby sick. It’s a glamorous life!

6. What is your all time favorite book?

It’s got to be either Wuthering Heights or Michael Ende’s Neverending Story. I could reread those two endlessly.

7. eBooks or print?

I’m all for eBooks these days, although I do prefer print for reference books. I’m trying to declutter at the moment in preparation for moving house, and I’m so glad that these days I buy all my music and books electronically, and stream all my TV box sets. Print editions are gorgeous though, and I do love my collection of gay romance paperbacks signed by the authors!

8. Heels or flats?

I love an excuse to wear heels, but I’m in flats most of the time. Actually, most of the time I’m in my sheepskin slipper boots. Best footwear investment I ever made!

9.  If you had to do it all over again would you change anything in your first book?

If you’d asked me that a few years ago I’d have come up with all kinds of things I wanted to change after reading the reviews on Goodreads. But you know what? I don’t read reviews any more (except the ones I’ve requested), and I’m much more chilled out about what readers think. I will always pay attention to the feedback from my critique partners and my editor, but once the book is done, it’s done. So no, I think Barging In should stand as it is. It might not be perfect, but it was the best I could make it at the time. Dan and Robin will always have a special place in my heart.
