Wendy reviews ‘Bought: A Ripples In The Status Quo Story, Bk #1’ by R. Phoenix. Published March 22, 2016 by R. Phoenix. 43 pgs.
Why I picked this story: This is a brand new author to me, but I know that I will be reading more of her work. She has a gritty dark style in this book that is definitely not for every reader. I am glad that I was able to review this author as part of my two for one theme this week.

BLURB: When he agreed to take the fall for his pack leader’s failed attempts to help the Rebellion, Jace knew he wouldn’t live long enough to regret it. However, instead of the noble end he envisioned for himself, the werewolf finds himself at the mercy of a witch and his depraved games. Though he clings to his conviction that he can withstand anything his new master can dish out, it isn’t long before he realizes pride has no place in his life as the pet of the controlling Elias Ivers.
Revised & expanded edition as of 3/22/16. Please note that content, publisher, and other aspects of the work have changed.
(This dark erotica novella caters to those who cheer on the villains as they pursue their goals…no matter what it takes to get there. This includes Very Bad Things as well as Very Sexy Things.
Those with sensibilities will likely be offended and want to attack the author with flaming pitchforks. If this applies to you, save an author. Step away from the button.
Light-heartedness aside, this is dark erotica, and it does contain elements of depravity and cruelty that will be offensive to some readers. Please proceed with caution or skip this read.)

Please note that the RISQ world has little place for humanity, and as a result, content in these works may be offensive to some readers. They can be read as stand-alones or as serials in a larger story.
REVIEW:
I was instantly hooked by the main character Jace, a werewolf who has given himself up on charges of treason to be sold into the supernatural slave market in order to save his lover who is the pack leader and a spy.
I loved that this character was tough as nails but believed in the power of love so much that he took the fall for his lover knowing that it was most likely going to mean the end of his life. What Jace finds waiting for him though, is so much worse than he could have ever imagined.
He is bought by a witch named Elias.
Elias quickly has Jace doing unthinkable things while under his powerful magic. Elias is nuts. Completely certifiable and that means that he has a very warped and wicked imagination. He has one goal it would seem and that at the moment is to break Jace. This has some fairly hard core BDSM scenes in it, I would say that fall mainly under humiliation, for as short as the story is. You won’t be warming up to anything here, just jumping right in.
The sex… I would have to describe it as consensual under duress (make no mistake that this is what you are reading here) was very hot. This author can write sex, no lie.
The characters are well written and the world that R. Phoenix has created is exactly what I would picture for these guys. This is a very dark short story, it has the perfect amount of every element in its 43 pages and should be read as the first in the serial. There is a great plot and I see where this has some real promise. I cannot wait to read the rest of the serials in this series.
As the author says in the blurb, this isn’t a book for everyone. There are some disturbing scenes, so if that’s not your thing, this isn’t for you.
8.5/10 pots of gold (85% of 100% recommended) or 4.25 of 5 stars.
Excerpt:
Need raged through him like some great inferno, searing him from the inside out and leaving him breathless in its wake. Loathing followed hard on the heels of his desire, and he desperately tried to use his hatred and anger as a shield against the ache in his groin. He struggled to think clearly, but the overwhelming craving for touch clouded his every attempt. He had never been so completely out of control before, and he knew on some level that this wasn’t him.
He hated being manipulated with a passion that drove him to violence, and knowing that Elias had donesomething to him to trigger him into nearly uncontrollable lust infuriated him even more. No one, not even a witch, should have been able to have such complete control over another person, but it felt like he’d been drugged within an inch of his life.
His hands tightened into fists as he caught himself rubbing the head of his cock against the bottom of the kennel, and he whined as his thoughts faltered into a haze of lust all over again. It hurt, and it felt good, and he couldn’t decide if the pleasure or the pain was more intense.
“You can’t help yourself, can you?” Elias asked, his voice filled to the brim with false sympathy so blatant Jace couldn’t mistake it for anything but mockery. “I knew bitches went through heat, but didn’t you say you were something more than that?”
“I’m not a bitch,” Jace snarled, his fingernails digging sharply into his palms as he forced his hips to stop moving.
“No? Well, you’re in heat all the same, aren’t you?” The witch’s fingertips grazed the side of the kennel over the lock, but the door remained closed.
“What the fuck did you do to me?” One of his fists unfurled, and Jace fought not to touch himself. He couldn’t fail this challenge, and he knew that was exactly what it was. His fingers curled around his cock all the same.
“Would you prefer that list categorically or alphabetically?”
Jace wanted to rip his smug throat out.
He wanted to claim those mocking lips with a searing kiss, to shove Elias down and claim him; he wanted to satiate his desperate need with the witch’s body. His fingers tightened around his length, and he felt the heat of it as he tried to keep himself from masturbating in front of his new owner. Not that it would take much for him to find release with how aroused he was…
“Don’t you understand?” the other man continued, fingers nimbly working at his tie until it fell loosely around his neck. Jace wanted to take it in his hands and strangle the witch with it. “You are no one. You are nothing but what I make of you.”

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Phoenix has an unhealthy fascination with contrasts: light and dark, heroes and villains, order and chaos. She believes that love can corrupt and power can redeem. Her muse is a sadomasochistic slavedriver who thinks it’s terribly amusing to give her the best ideas when she just got comfortable and warm in bed, and she passes on that torture to her readers.
If she had it her way, she would describe the books in her “Ripples in the Status Quo” world as: “Supernatural creatures take over the world and turn humans into pets and food. There’s some sex between guys. And… um… fucked up things happen.” It’s probably a good thing she has people around her to remind her that she actually wants people to read her books. (They should really be more diligent, especially when they know she’s writing her author bio.)
She’s an author, stay-at-home mother, housewife, second time college student, and duck herder extraordinaire. She’s learning how to cook without burning the house down, her garden is somehow neither drowning nor drying up, and one day she might remember what that mythical thing called “free time” is. She’s starting to wonder who thought it was a good idea to write bios in third person.
She also tries entirely too hard to be funny, and she mercilessly inflicts her terrible sense of humor upon anyone who speaks to her. Really, it’s not you. It’s her. All the same, she’d love it if you’d say hello, because it makes her day to hear that someone read something she wrote. If they enjoyed it, there’s usually an awkward happy dance and embarrassing sounds of joy to accompany it (no, not that kind of sound, you perv).
