Synopsis:

A drifter since his teens, Jimmy Dorsett has no home and no hope. What he does have is a duffel bag, a lot of stories, and a junker car. Then one cold desert night he picks up a hitchhiker and ends up with something more: a letter from a dying man to the son he hasn’t seen in years.

On a quest to deliver the letter, Jimmy travels to Rattlesnake, a small town nestled in the foothills of the California Sierras. The centerpiece of the town is the Rattlesnake Inn, where the bartender is handsome former cowboy Shane Little. Sparks fly, and when Jimmy’s car gives up the ghost, Shane gets him a job as handyman at the inn.

Both within the community of Rattlesnake and in Shane’s arms, Jimmy finds an unaccustomed peace. But it can’t be a lasting thing. The open road continues to call, and surely Shane—a strong, proud man with a painful past and a difficult present—deserves better than a lying vagabond who can’t stay put for long.

Review

Rattlesnake is the first book by Kim Fielding I have had the pleasure of experiencing.  I chose to listen to the audio book and have to say I loved it from beginning to end.  KC Kelly did and excellent job narrating the story and portraying both Jimmy and Shane’s characters.

I was able to instantly connect with Jimmy and even Tom.  My heart broke for Tom and the regrets he had that would never be fixed.  When Jimmy ends up in Rattlesnake and meets Shane for the first time I was both excited and a little scared.  I could already tell that there was chemistry and I was really excited for what that could mean for Jimmy.  At the same time I was nervous that once Jimmy revealed what lead him to Rattlesnake, Shane would end any chance they would have right away.

Both of these men are such special characters and my heart instantly felt for them.  Jimmy Is a drifter.  He didn’t have a home or a family.  He is caring and honest.  Shane I adore.  He is sweet but has a backbone when needed.  I love how he helped Jimmy without even knowing anything about him. Only seeing a man who needed a little help. As they spent time togethor and became friends and eventually more all I wanted was for them both to heal and be able to find the happiness they deserved.

The sex scenes were hot. They wore written with so much emotion making it more than just sex.  It was meaningful when they didn’t really want it to be. They connected so well that even the dirtiest scenes made them beautiful.

I really enjoyed the secondary characters.  They added a lot to the story.  Jimmy’s Aunt was great. I liked how she was tough and weary at first but then when her protector shield went down she was a sweet woman.  Most of Shane’s family didn’t have a huge part but the pieces they were in I truly enjoyed. I love how they try to protect Shane but also support and accept him.

Overall, Rattlesnake was a wonderful MM romance.  It was sweet and heartbreaking. It that had me in tears, laughing and so hopeful throughout the book.  I can’t wait to read/listen to more books in the future by Kim Fielding.  I will also be looking for more audiobooks narrated by KC Kelly.

AuthorBio

Kim Fielding is the bestselling author of numerous m/m romance novels, novellas, and short stories. Like Kim herself, her work is eclectic, spanning genres such as contemporary, fantasy, paranormal, and historical. Her stories are set in alternate worlds, in 15th century Bosnia, in modern-day Oregon. Her heroes are hipster architect werewolves, housekeepers, maimed giants, and conflicted graduate students. They’re usually flawed, they often encounter terrible obstacles, but they always find love.

Kim’s novel Brute was the 2013 Rainbow Award Winner for Best Gay Fantasy and tied for fourth place for Best Gay Novel.

After having migrated back and forth across the western two-thirds of the United States, Kim calls the boring part of California home. She lives there with her husband, her two daughters, and her day job as a university professor, but escapes as often as possible via car, train, plane, or boat. This may explain why her characters often seem to be in transit as well. She dreams of traveling and writing full-time.

  1. I have this, but haven’t read it yet. I’ve read Brute by Kim Fielding, but nothing else yet. I love characters with hidden secrets or stories. And I love seeing how it could affect the development. Bumping up the priority on this one! Great review 🙂
