Bethany reviews ‘Rough Cut’ by Kendall Morgan. Published by Tulabella Ruby Press on August 1, 2014, 35 pgs.
Why I read this book: I love football, football stories and football players and after reading this blurb I wanted to see if these two would reconnect.
NOTE: We were provided a copy of this in exchange for an honest review.
Chris Hodak, a former college football defensive lineman, never came out. He didn’t think big, burly football players were ever really gay, but he also never got over his crush on Rohan Moore, a hunky teammate with whom he had a fumbling make out session one night after a game.
Twenty years after that fateful night, Chris, who is now in his 40s, again meets Rohan, an out and proud big, gay hairy bear who owns a barber shop catering to bears. Rohan is still beautiful but isn’t interested in Chris because he hates closet cases. For Chris that spark is still there, and it gets even stronger when he sits in Rohan’s chair for a shave and a haircut. But in order to get Rohan back, Chris must be braver and tougher than he ever was on any football field.
Sometimes you need a novel, the kind with 300+ pages. With an en-depth plot and story line. A book that takes you days to finish and when you do you are left with a pretty epic book hangover. This is NOT that book, lol. This book is light, short, and hits the spot. You know that spot, the time when you need something to recharge yourself. Like a palate cleanser. This is THAT book.
I am afraid this review will not be long but I think that is ok because this book only took about 30 minutes to read and I refuse to give too much away.
I really liked Chris from the beginning of the book. But then again I do love big burly gay men afraid of coming out. He thinks that men his size can’t or shouldn’t be gay, but that doesn’t stop his attraction to one time teammate Rohan. They shared something twenty years ago and when he runs into him years later the attraction is still there. But Rohan is an out and proud Bear, just what Chris is still wanting.
But Rohan is not looking for a closet case. He isn’t looking to hide who he is or who he wants to be with. So when he runs into Chris he isn’t sure that starting something with Chris is a good idea. Oh he wants to because Chris hits all his buttons but refuses to step back in the closet for anyone.
I really enjoyed this book and how the author shed some light into their past. She took a 34 page book and gave us a peek in the past, the present, and the future of these two men. This is a book I will read when I need a pick me up, something light and fluffy. Well done for the page length.

I started writing gay male erotic romance stories in the early ’90s, but only gay male porn magazines would publish them. I’m so glad things have gotten more respectable and the readership more broad. I am a lesbian in an interracial same-sex marriage, and I love writing interracial romance stories. I love flipping stereotypes and challenging myself to write characters that are ever further from who I am. I hope you enjoy my stories. I certainly love writing them.
