Wendy reviews The Poison Within: An Order Universe Short Story by Karisa Bacon. Self published March 18, 2017, 11,000 words.
Black clouds of xenophobia gather over Radvadur, the western province of the Empire. The political climate is strained and fragile. A surge of Nymph refugees has stirred widespread hostility towards non-humans. When the investigation of a gruesome triple murder linked to the refugee camp ensues, it takes Inspector Käyru Skaer and his lover, Count Ellydhar Finn-Jánn, along an unusual path, at the end of which a precious gift awaits.
Käyru and Elly are worlds apart in social standing, but they have found common ground in the bedroom—up against the wall and the stable doors, too. The arrangement between them ought to have been temporary and of no consequence. As their circumstances change, will they find the courage to risk their hearts?
We were given a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I was given the opportunity to read and review this book after having posted a spotlight for another story by this author last week, see the post for The Mutt here. When I posted that spotlight and read the blurb, I ran out and bought it. As soon as I read The Mutt I couldn’t wait to read this one.
First things first… We want to say congratulations to Kasia Bacon on the release of this book!
I love the characters in this world. Not just this story, but this entire world! It’s a refreshing twist to the whole fantasy/paranormal world where every one is immortal and harder than Hades to kill. In this book, the fantasy/mythical characters are more vunerable and can be killed as easily as their human counterparts and live side by side with them as well. Although not always happily. I found it easier to connect with them. I adore when authors are able to incorporate the same kinds of struggles that we face in RL with their fantasy characters and that’s just what I found in this story. The rift between class and species much like we see with every day life.
Käyru and Elly are such easy characters to love. They are both sweet and I just wanted to hug them. Käyru feels like he’s not good enough for Lord Elly and wonders how they can possibly be anything other than lovers in hiding. Elly’s character is sweet and kind yet still a Lord. He’s always putting others before himself even at great personal cost. The separation that they feel between them because of their class makes it difficult for them to share feelings. That causes all kinds of unnecessary turmoil that I don’t think is done yet. The political intrigue, the action and the suspense kept me from doing ANYTHING else until I had read the entire book!
This story is a short one, however it ends on a HFN and a to be continued. I. Am. Hooked! I sense a real mystery thriller coming up and I can’t wait to see what this author has come up with for the next book in this series.
