Talon Valdez knew when he transformed into an enhanced human, his life and his dreams were finished. Reviled, mistrusted, and often locked away, the enhanced were viewed as monsters, despised by the public, and never trusted to serve in the military or any law enforcement agency.
Years later he gets a chance to set up a task force of enhanced to serve in the FBI, but with one proviso: each enhanced must partner with a regular human.
Finn Mayer dreamed of joining the FBI from the time he was 14 and made every possible sacrifice to make it happen, including living with his selfish mother and bullying, homophobic brother and never having a boyfriend. But his undiagnosed dyslexia stopped his aspirations dead in their tracks. His last chance is to partner with Talon, an enhanced with deadly abilities who doesn’t trust regular humans with their secrets and wants Finn to fail.
Four weeks to prove himself to the team. Four weeks for the team to prove itself to the public. And when another group threatens their success – and their lives – four weeks for them to survive.

Barns and Noble So, I dropped the ball on this one. This should have been reviewed waaaay back in September but somehow (I was probably distracted by something shiny), after telling this author that I would review it, I completely spaced it out. I can’t apologize enough. Especially since I respect this author so much and I ADORED the e-book version of this story.
I loved the idea of ‘enhanced’ characters. It kind of reminds me of superheroes but in this case, the superheroes are villainized by the general population out of fear. An abnormally strong fear that was learned and cultivated to the point that parents will turn on their children and toss them out like so much trash. I like that they don’t manifest their abilities until they are pre-teens to teens. These ‘enhanced’ children have no malice towards anyone and are just as afraid of what they are as their parents, families and friends. That makes them even more endearing to me than ever. Victoria Sue REALLY knows how to pull on my heartstrings.
So when the government decides to pair these enhanced people with ordinary FBI agents to form a new branch… you can just imagine how it goes over. No one is happy and all kinds of sparks fly.
Talon~ Had his dreams of being the next in his family to go into law enforcement shattered when he transformed. I could really feel for him. His family didn’t throw him to the wolves like so many others, but that has its own set of issues. He is a complex character, angry yet wanting to use his powers for good. He’s a born leader and was the perfect choice to lead this squad of agents. What he doesn’t agree with is being paired with a regular human and there’s bunches of friction when he’s paired up with Finn. Finn pushes all of Talon’s buttons and it was fun as well as frustrating to watch him want and take and push him away.
Finn~ Dreams of being an FBI agent and getting away from his horrible family. He’s struggled and worked for years to have this chance and when it comes he’s not about to let a bunch of angry enhanced guys ruin his chance. I liked this character’s dogged determination and with it his naivete. He doesn’t have the prejudice and fear of enhanced that many others have, including the enhanced that he’s working with. He’s got an air of innocence about him as well as being strong and quick thinking. He also has his own set of issues that he was able to hide from people for years. It doesn’t take long though before Talon has him figured out… kinda lol. It was harder for me to watch this character as he falls for Talon and keeps getting pushed away. I wanted things to be wonderful for him right away because he’s had such a hard time his whole life.
The other enhanced men in the team were wonderful and I need to have all of their stories! I can’t wait to read/listen to them as they fight for their country and for all the other enhanced. There’s TONS of suspense and intrigue and so many possibilities that I can’t wait to see how this new team of enhanced/human agents with their acronym of HERO fares against all kinds of evil, bigotry and prejudice.
Victoria Sue has created an amazing world with lots of drama and suspense along with a healthy dose of romance. I’m moving on to the next story ASAP!
Nick J Russo was a phenomenal choice for narrator. He has the perfect inflection of each character. I love his voice for this story!
Victoria Sue fell in love with love stories as a child when she would hide away with her mom’s library books and dream of the dashing hero coming to rescue her from math homework. She never mastered math but carried on reading. Loves writing about gorgeous boys loving each other the best—especially with a paranormal twist—but always with a happy ending. Is an English northern lass currently serving twenty to life in Florida—unfortunately, she spends more time chained to her computer than on a beach.
Loves to hear from her readers and can be found most days lurking on Facebook where she doesn’t need factor 1000 sun-cream to hide her freckles.
