Erryn and Melissa review ‘Garrett (Bound and Controlled Book 1)’ by Shaw Montgomery. This book was released by the author on June 15, 2017, and is 126 pgs long. The audiobook version of this story was narrated by Kenneth Obi.  It was released on January 9, 2018, and is 3 hrs and 56 mins long. A copy was provided in exchange for an honest review.

Why I read this book:

Erryn: I love BDSM books and have been eyeing this series for a while.

Melissa: The blurb really got my attention and it already had some high reviews.  Since this is a new to me author and narrator, I took a chance.

Garrett was at his breaking point.

There were only so many times in a week you should have to see someone you were…attracted to…infatuated with…but certainly didn’t have a crush on. Doms didn’t have those. Especially on a customer who probably wasn’t even gay, much less a sub. Business 101 – do not flirt with a client.

Wyatt was losing his mind.

Hiding his obsession was getting harder and harder. All he wanted to do was kneel in front of Garrett and call him Master. But the sexy insurance agent never seemed to see him. He only noticed the nervous, awkward insured who came in way too often.

When the two men are missing what’s right in front of their faces, it might take family stepping in to point out the obvious. That they were meant for each other.

This story contains M/m sexual content, BDSM elements, spanking, and orgasm denial.

The Bound & Controlled series follows four brothers, who are each involved in the BDSM lifestyle in some way, as they look for love. Each book features a different brother, but the books are best enjoyed in order. The books are not taboo in nature.

Book 1: Garrett

Book 2: Brent

Book 3: Grant

Book 4: Bryce

Erryn’s Review:

I read “The Owners,” the prequel for this series of books, and enjoyed it.  Although the introduction of so many characters was overwhelming, it provided me with the set-up for the series. I got a feel for Ben and his submissive, Connor, owners of the club. If I only got the image of Connor when he’s drunk, that was enough. Ben and Connor appear in the books, but interestingly, the club does not appear in this first book.

I love the premise of this series – 4 brothers, all gay and all into the BDSM lifestyle. The four brothers are differentiated both by their preferences and in their temperaments. They inherited an insurance company when their father passed and each fills a different role there.

Garrett is good with people, so he works in the office, meeting with clients and preparing insurance policies. Honestly, I barely think about insurance (which I’m sure is bad), but in the first few minutes, I learned a lot and in a fun way.

That was probably because of Wyatt. The young man is a submissive and had previously spotted Garrett at the BDSM club. Wyatt is facing the dilemma many submissives do – how to approach a Dominant? Especially one as charismatic and strong as Garrett. The submissive worries about being rejected – but isn’t that a fear we all face? And Garrett doesn’t want to presume anything about Wyatt, who’s a customer, and Garrett knows he shouldn’t go there.

Interventions and pushes by friends and family encourage the two men to take a chance on each other. Garrett sees the real Wyatt – a creative and beautiful submissive who needs someone to take a strong hand to him. Wyatt’s mind is chaotic and Garrett has the ability to soothe and calm. They take things slow, working through negotiations and having in-depth discussions about what each needs and what each can bring to the relationship.

Sound boring? Far from it. Once the initial discussions are conducted, the men move into the fun – orgasm denial, spankings, and more. But the relationship is far more than just physical. There is a connection of souls, two men who can meld their lives and get their needs met while loving someone.

This is a lovely quick listen. As Garrett says to Wyatt, “you’re my anything, sweet.  I’m keeping you for payment as your pleasure”. He then proclaims his love.

I love my happy endings and have ‘Brent’ cued up in my iPod.

Kenneth Obi. Give the man props, he is good at what he does. I first heard him narrating M.A. Innes’ books and his voice is both soothing and energetic. He has a distinct voice for each of the brothers and handles Wyatt’s southern drawl very well. He adds to the book and I’m glad to see he’s narrating the other books in the series. I can’t wait to listen to them.

Erryn’s Rating:

9/10 Points of Gold (100% Recommended) – Compares to 4.5/5 Stars

Melissa’s Review:

This is my first read by this author and it wasn’t bad. I thought Wyatt was really cute and I really enjoyed how he acted in the beginning (and the rest too). The story is told from alternating POVs and when it came time to hear Wyatt’s thoughts about the time he spent in Garrett’s presence at the office, it was just too funny. All Wyatt wanted to do was kneel and submit, and it’s the way he telegraphed his desires internally and to his best friend, I just laughed. He was so flustered and flummoxed! If he had only known that Garrett would have more than welcomed that behavior – how much time they could have saved!

Overall this was an ok story and had some good moments. I loved the relationship between these two and felt they were perfect for a each other. A match made only in fiction romance heaven. 🙂 The narration I thought was the best part, and I don’t think I would have enjoyed this story as much if I had been reading it. Sometimes it’s hard to tell though, so it’s possible I would have enjoyed the story equally had I read it.

Kenneth Obi is a new to me narrator as well, and I enjoyed his voice. He really was able to carry off these characters and their BDSM lifestyle. His voice for each man was distinct and I didn’t wonder who was speaking. This was a well done production and I look forward to hearing this narrator again. And I wouldn’t mind if that was with book 2. 😉

Melissa’s Rating:

6/10 Points of Gold (60% Recommended) – Compares to 3/5 Stars

Shaw Montgomery loves reading, traveling, and family. While not necessarily in that order, they all rank pretty close. Shaw has lived all over the United States and even Germany. While the coast of North Carolina is a favorite place Shaw currently lives in the Western United States. Current wish list places to travel to are Australia, Italy, and Scotland.

When Shaw wants to write about things that are a little more taboo (or sometimes a lot more taboo), Shaw writes under the name M.A. Innes. If you like M/m content that is sweet and naughty check out Shaw’s other books.

Shaw reads an eclectic mix of genres; everything from Mystery and Sci-Fi Space Westerns, to traditional Romance and all kinds of Erotica. Currently the stories in Shaw’s head are femdom romance but there are some M/M and Sci-Fi/Fantasy that can’t wait to come out as well.

Note – there is a prequel of the series, found for $1.00 on Amazon: The Owners
