After being dumped by his long-term boyfriend for being overweight, Henry Beckett decides to make some drastic changes. In a vain attempt at getting his boyfriend back, Henry does the most absurdly frightening thing he can think of.
He joins a gym.
Reed Henske is a personal trainer who isn’t sure he’ll ever be ready to date again. He’s sick of guys who are only interested in the perfect body image, never seeing him for who he really is.
As Reed tortures Henry with things like diet and exercise, Henry enamours Reed with recipes and laughter. As the friendship lines start to blur, Henry is convinced there’s no way Thor-like Reed could ever be interested in a guy like him.
Reed just has to convince Henry that life isn’t about reaching your ideal bodyweight. It’s about finding your perfect counterweight.
A complimentary audiobook was provided in exchange for an honest review.
Why I read this book: This has been on my TBR for a while and when the chance came to listen to the audio I thought it was fate slapping me upside the head. 😊
This was so cute and funny! Joel Leslie was hilarious as Henry. OMG, those exercise scenes where Henry is crying and moaning in pain, too funny!!! 😀 I didn’t know what to expect with this book but it’s been on my TBR for a while and I was excited to finally get the chance to read (listen to) it. It didn’t disappoint. Leslie is a great narrator and in this book he shined. He brings so much to the character of Henry (and Reed); Henry is such a drama queen and Leslie was able to bring that characteristic to such light I couldn’t help but laugh and Henry’s ridiculousness.
Joel Leslie participated in RGR – M/M and LGBT Book Events held March 22, 2018. He was joined by author NR Walker and we were treated to him reading a scene from The Weight of It All. Please fast forward to the 4:40 mark as the minutes leading up are him and NR trying to get the video to work. 😃
This scene was hilarious! Watching him perform it doubly so, but to listen to it as part of the audiobook gives you a warm introduction into the comedy that is coming your way. Henry is such a delightful character, who doesn’t take himself or life too seriously. He can laugh about himself and this snippet is perfect to show you that. I laughed out loud watching Joel perform this, and I can totally picture him being this active and outgoing during the whole performance. NR’s talent is perfectly on display here. She was able to write a character (all the characters) so realistically and in such a way that we as the general public can relate to. How many of us have seen those early morning exercisers and wondered if they were crazy?
There isn’t a lot of drama-drama in this story. It’s more romantic comedy with shy guys navigating their way into a relationship. There are some tense moments but I never once doubted these guys were going to make it. Bring the tissues, but only to dry your eyes from laughing so much. 😂
I highly recommend this AND the audio! 4.25 stars/8.5 pots for the story, 5 stars/10 pots for narration.
N.R. Walker is an Australian author, who loves her genre of gay romance. She loves writing and spends far too much time doing it, but wouldn’t have it any other way.
She is many things; a mother, a wife, a sister, a writer. She has pretty, pretty boys who she gives them life with words.
She likes it when they do dirty, dirty things…but likes it even more when they fall in love. She used to think having people in her head talking to her was weird, until one day she happened across other writers who told her it was normal.
She’s been writing ever since…
He is proud to have a strong following with m/m listeners and an ongoing relationship with some of the finest writers in the genre. He loves that every day he gets to share these beautiful, inspirational and empowering GLBT characters with the world.
His authors have praised him as “a narrator among narrators, a man whose ability to create different characters rests on the power of his voice and his impeccable delivery,” and a “true delight…” “his professionalism, good humor, and charm make him a dream to work with,” “Anyone else would only be second best.”
Joel has consistent access to his home studio for all production needs. When not in the booth he spends his time chasing after two loquacious wiener dogs.
