Wendy reviews ‘Not So Vanilla’ by Morgan Noel. Self published March 29, 2018, 119 pages.
Bartholomew’s life is perfect. He’s got a job he loves, he’s in a committed relationship with his loving boyfriend who appreciates his neurotic tendencies, social anxiety, and general awkwardness. It’s not ‘white-picket-fence-and-Golden-Retriever’-perfect, but their nice little apartment in the city and the cat they rescued from the shelter come pretty close.
The domestic bliss gets disturbed when his boyfriend Kyle brings a very hot friend from high school into their sanctuary, making both of them wonder if perhaps ‘perfect’ is as relative as good sex.

What a fun story! Mew is absolutely adorkable with his nerdy, anti-social, anxiety ridden, introverted ways. I felt for this character as he struggled to believe that he was loved and important. He overthinks everything to the extent of being awkward around people and the only one he is remotely comfortable with is his boyfriend and that is one of the neatest relationships that I have ever read. Kyle knows just the right thing to say to Mew… most of the time. He blunders (accidentally on purpose), by bringing home an old friend without warning Mew first. Then things get interesting! Turns out this friend is super hot and also Kyle’s first boyfriend. He’s also without a home and Mew reluctantly agrees to let him stay on the couch in their small apartment. What could possibly go wrong?
The gorgeous Adam is sexy, easy-going, has a way of bringing out the worst in Mew but in a really good way that makes Mew have to deal with Adam. It sometimes works to help Mew out of his anxiety, because anger and humiliation can do that! He’s also not who or what Mew is led to believe. He’s everything that Mew wishes he could be. He pushes Mew to new levels and makes him want things that are ‘Not So Vanilla’.
This was a sweet, cute, light on the angst but high on the anxiety, story that has more to it than the quick read I thought it was. This one’s definitely going on my comfort read list!
