Melissa reviews In the Wreckage (Metahuman Files #1) by Hailey Turner audiobook, Narrated by Greg Boudreaux  released 04-19-18, 10 hrs and 14 mins. Ebook Published February 19th 2017, 341 pages.

A Marine with honor.

After surviving a horrific chemical attack that turned him into a metahuman, Captain Jamie Callahan got a second lease on life. For three years he’s been working for the Metahuman Defense Force and leading Alpha Team—all against the wishes of his family. The job requires his full dedication, so it’s no surprise Jamie doesn’t have time for a relationship. An enticing one-night stand with a gorgeous stranger is all it takes to show Jamie exactly what he’s been missing. When a mission to take down a terrorist cell brings that same stranger back into his world, Jamie’s life gets complicated.

A soldier with secrets.

Staff Sergeant Kyle Brannigan was only looking to relieve some stress after a long mission. He didn’t know the hot guy he picked up at a bar was the leader of the MDF’s top field team. When Kyle and his partner get seconded to Alpha Team to help fight a terrorist threat, he has to balance his desire for Jamie against his duty to keep his secrets safe. That gets harder and harder to do amidst regulations both are tempted to break.

Two men trying to survive.

Giving into passion could cost both their careers. Abiding by the rules will only result in heartache. An attack on MDF headquarters brings with it a choice Jamie and Kyle can’t escape—duty, or love?

In the Wreckage is a 100k word steamy m/m sci-fi military romance with a HFN ending. There is military violence within the story that may not be suitable for everyone, as well as explicit intimate scenes not suitable for readers under 18.

A complimentary copy was provided in exchange for an honest review.

Why I read this: I’ve had this book on my to-read list for a while now, and when the audio was available I jumped at the chance to finally get to this story!  I’ve heard great things about it. 🙂

To start I need to say that the sci-fi genre isn’t really my thing, and while technically I don’t think this wouldn’t fit the parameters of science fiction, it does snuggle up to it. 😉 Now, having said that, I really, really, really enjoyed this!

FYI, there was A LOT of sex which I was ready to fast forward because OMG, these guys are like bunnies; I was totally over the looooooong sex scenes, but the relationship between Kyle and Jamie was great! Insta-love for sure (which, ugh and why??) and their instant trust and bond was far fetched for me, but overall I dug their relationship.

What really sold me on this story was the level of detail and just information I was given showing me this new world. If you’ve read the THIRDS Series by Charlie Cochet, this is so very much of that same ilk. I couldn’t get enough of these guys or the team!

The narration was so super stellar! So many accents in rapid succession is amazing! I am blown away by Greg Boudreaux’s talent and can’t wait to listen to the next audio productions for this series. The narration deserves 5 stars because it was just brilliant and pulled these characters together for me. There were so freakin’ many voices!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now, a little bit of plot synopsis. 😀 Jamie is a Metahuman which you could call a side effect to a chemical attack. Those who survive develop fantastical abilities such as telepathy, super strength, telekinesis, and so much more. But it’s rare for a Metahuman to result from the attack and since most people end up dying, scientists have been trying to come up with a vaccine. Enter those who wish to stop a vaccine from being developed as well as those who wish to use the science for their own nefarious purposes. Jamie’s team from all appearances is the TOP and they are sent in to help rescue scientists believed to be in danger due to their work.

Kyle and his brother Alexi are new to the team and Kyle is the sniper (I can’t remember what role Alexi plays beyond team member). What makes things interesting is Kyle and Jamie met at a bar one night and had an amazing round of sex, something they both needed and despite being strangers felt something immediately for the other. I rolled my eyes for this part, but didn’t let it deter me. When the two men discover that they are going to be working on the same team, Jamie puts a stop to any future possibilities of them getting together. Not only are they team mates would could make things weird, but Jamie is Kyle’s superior, and that’s a BIG grey area. But, when things during a mission go bad (big bad), Jamie can’t help but think he made the wrong choice, because death is never far from their lives and he thinks he should be able to enjoy time with Kyle while he can.

Hurray! The two decide to become a thing, and with the help of their team mates, are able to hide their relationship from the Brass. But still, things are not going well in the world and the team is called in once again to take out the enemy. OMG, the situation was tense because I didn’t know what was going to happen to Kyle.

give this 4.25 stars/8.5 pots and the narration 5/10 pots.

Good job! Can’t wait for book 2. 🙂
