Dana reviews Join the Club (Four Kings Security Book 3) by Charlie Cochet (Self published November 18, 2018, 261 pages) A copy was provided in exchange for an honest review.

Blurb: When the cards are stacked against you, the Kings will even the odds.

Eduardo “Lucky” Morales is a fighter, from his childhood days in Cuba to his time as a Special Forces Green Beret. Scarred by the wars of his past, Lucky has learned nothing lasts forever. Guarding his heart is second nature, and getting emotionally involved is not an option. As co-owner of Four Kings Security, Lucky works hard alongside his former brothers-in-arms and fellow Kings, but he also plays hard. Flirting with sexy Texas cowboy and detective, Mason Cooper, is too much fun to resist, until Mason turns the tables on him.

Mason Cooper may not be a soldier, but he’s fought his share of battles as an openly gay cop and now a detective for Major Crimes. Mason has no idea when things changed between him and Lucky, but the gorgeous, fiery Cuban has turned his world upside down. When a mistake leads to his suspension from the force, Mason turns to the least likely person for help: Ward Kingston.

Determined to keep Mason at arms’ length, Lucky is surprised to find the man at Four Kings Security. The Florida nights might be getting cooler, but the heat between Lucky and Mason burns hotter with every passing moment. Working private security can be dangerous and unpredictable, but so can falling in love.

I am a big fan of this author so reading this book was a no brainer. I have read and/or listened to the first two books of this series for my own pleasure but am happy to review this third book. For those who aren’t familiar with this series, yet, I want to give a quick rundown of what the series is about. Four Kings Security is an agency created by a group of friends and brothers-in-arms after their team lost some members and the rest were sent home. They have nicknames in common given to them by a former teammate, all something to do with playing cards. In the first two books, two of the kings fell in love with two civilians they were protecting. The two previous novels were action-packed with hot romance.

Join the Club started out differently than the first two novels of this series. Lucky is one of the Kings who co-own the security company and the other main character is a police detective who temporarily joins the security team. Mason isn’t a guy needing protection, and he has known Lucky for awhile, ever since he dated Lucky’s cousin, Ace. The two are more than a match for each other and most of this book is them working really well together, and fighting the feelings they have for each other.

Lucky is a really good guy who came from nothing, and he definitely appreciates finer quality clothes and shoes. Not that he isn’t a hard worker who happens to be quite giving. Born in Cuba he had a hard start when he came to America, and his ethnicity is still something people question him about. The author does a good job of making this story feel really relevant to how the country is so racially charged right now. Mason really liked Ace. but he was never able to let his guard down like he can with Lucky. It is easy for him to fall in with the Kings and with Lucky’s family, but he has secrets in his past. Secrets that you just know are going to be revealed.

This isn’t the boy saves boy and they fall in love story that the previous stories have been. Both men are willing to take care of each other while also having confidence that they can take care of themselves. It isn’t an easy match, both of them have trust issues but it is a pretty happy ending with a few surprises. The epilogue in particular is very exciting and lays out the next King’s story and I think it looks pretty awesome. Definitely recommend this series. While I think Join the Club could be read as a standalone, I think it is more enjoyable to read the series in order so you can really get an idea of the character dynamics.
