Wendy Reviews ‘Escaping Solitude’ (The Escape Trilogy Book 2) by Sara Dobie Bauer. Published by NineStarPress October 29, 2018, 111 pages.
Ancient vampire Andrew escaped his tropical island exile with his beloved human sailor, Edmund. They’ve now returned to Andrew’s home in nineteenth-century New Orleans and must navigate not only their developing relationship—and equally haunted pasts—but also a hungry coven of vampires Andrew used to call friends.
Desperate to stay by Andrew’s side forever, Edmund examines the impressive coven library in search of an Elder, the only creature capable of turning Edmund. Although missing for centuries, Andrew believes an Elder must still survive somewhere; they just have to find him.
The search is put on hold when Edmund receives word that his mother is ill in London, and the lovers set off on an oceanic journey surrounded by new friends and old enemies. When things go terribly wrong, Edmund’s fragile human life hangs in the balance, and an Elder must be found or Andrew will be alone forever.

I loved the first book in this trilogy! Read my review of ‘Escaping Exile’ HERE
The first book in this trilogy was wonderful. And you really need to read it first before diving into this one. It gave a feel for how these characters are monsters in their own right and it showed (at least in part) why Andrew had been exiled to the tropical island. It is where Andrew saves and falls in love with Edmund and was packed with action and adventure.
This book, the second in the trilogy… OMG! I wasn’t expecting anything like this story, let me tell you!!!
First I will tell you what I was expecting…
I thought that it would again be full of adventure and action. I thought that it would be super erotic with lots of steamy vampire hotness. I thought that the characters might get into some conflict with the coven that exiled him in the first place and I thought that it might find some resolution or perhaps another reason for the conflict to begin with. Let me tell you now, That’s. Not. This. Story!
What I discovered…
There was plenty of action and adventure as Andrew and Edmund explored the steamy streets of NOLA with its sins and decadence. There was soooo much vampire sexiness happening and there was certainly some conflict in the coven. But, what I didn’t expect to find was the depth that the author gave these characters and the feels that came with that. I was even seen shedding a tear or two and I really wasn’t expecting to cry while reading this story. I wasn’t expecting the feeling of dread because I just knew that something was going to happen. I mean, something always happens right? But I seriously felt DREAD! I didn’t think I would feel that strongly about these guys but the author did such an excellent job of writing them that I connected with them on a deep level. I was so invested in them and I still am.
I’ll warn you that this book ends with a cliff-hanger and I personally love them but I understand that some people will want to have the whole series before they start. I find something delicious about the anticipation, much like I imagine people that watch soap operas feel. I know that once the final book in the trilogy is ready I will feel like it’s my birthday and Christmas all rolled into one!
I HIGHLY recommend this series! Do yourself a favor if you love paranormal MM, historical, action/adventure and romance and get this trilogy!
10/10 Pots of Gold or 100% recommended
