Why I read this book:  I was ready for a new author.

When you owe money to a powerful mafia kingpin, you find a way to pay it back or you get hurt, and the only thing 26-year-old Jimmy Poe has to offer a man like Boss Cold is himself. Cold agrees to give Jimmy a chance to have his debt cancelled, but it will mean surrendering his body to Cold’s rough, ruthless demands every night until the very last penny has been repaid.

Over the coming days, Jimmy learns what it means to be truly mastered, and Cold’s stern dominance arouses him far more intensely than he would have thought possible. But as their business arrangement grows into a romance, can Cold keep Jimmy safe in his dangerous world?

Publisher’s note: Cold Hard Cash includes spankings and rough, intense sexual scenes.

My Review:

As always, I went into this book blind.  I came across it, seized it, and dug in.  To be clear – this is a dark book. Mafia books usually are – there are few warm and cuddly kingpins in the world.  No, this story isn’t about unicorns and rainbows.

The story is told entirely from Jimmy’s point of view.  He’s an easy character to love.  He’s put everything on the line to get his beloved father out of jail.  The father who was convicted of murdering Jimmy’s mother.  But Jimmy witnessed the crime and knows absolutely that his father didn’t do it.  At first he tried to stay in school – wanting to be a lawyer.  Then he had to drop out to pay his father’s mounting legal bills.  He’s in hock for a quarter mil to a nice pawn shop owner who used to be friends with Jimmy’s mother – but loyalty only goes so far.  When Jimmy’s debt is bought by the local mafia, all bets are off.  Debt is due – today.

Of course Jimmy can’t pay.  And when it looks like he’s going to be badly injured – a scene I found mildly disturbing – he offers himself up to the boss.  Boss Cold is intrigued – and gay – so he takes Jimmy up on the offer.  There are strict conditions and Jimmy intends to meet everyone.

And, of course, he doesn’t plan to fall in love.

This book took a lot of twists and turns I didn’t see coming.  I have to mention Cold’s sister – she was a hoot.  A bit of comic levity in an otherwise dark book.

Mafia books involve dubious characters doing dubious things.  Good authors make you root for them while questioning your own morality – if you were in that position, what would you do?  Also, just because, many of Cold’s men are gay.  Not a gay mafia, to be clear, just mafia men who prefer men.  Needless to say, I’m intrigued to see where this series goes next.

I am not familiar with Scott Carousel, the narrator, but I thought he did a great job.  Just the right gruff and gravitas for Cold.  Just the right innocence and naiveté for Jimmy.  If there are more audios, I’ll be happy to grab them.

My Rating:

9/10 Pots of Gold (90% Recommended) – Compares to 4.5/5 Stars
