A Scoring Chances Novel
Drafted to play for the Jacksonville Sea Storm, an NHL affiliate, twenty-year-old Lane Courtnall’s future looks bright, apart from the awkwardness he feels as a gay man playing on a minor league hockey team. He’s put his foot in his mouth a few times and alienated his teammates. Then, during a rivalry game, Lane throws off his gloves against Jared Shore, enforcer for the Savannah Renegades. It’s a strange way to begin a relationship.
Jared’s been playing minor league hockey for most of his career. He’s bisexual and doesn’t care if anyone knows. But he’s determined to avoid another love affair after the last one left him devastated. Out of nowhere a one-nighter with rookie Lane Courtnall gives him second thoughts. Lane reminds Jared why he loves the game and why love might be worth the risk. In turn, Jared hopes to show Lane how to be comfortable with himself on and off the ice. But they’re at different points in their careers, and both men will have to decide what they value most.
Lane has loved hockey all his life. His dream is to play in the NHL for the Toronto Maple Leafs. He is now 20. He has recently been drafted by the minors to the Jacksonville Sea Storm. Lane is awkward when it come to feelings and talking. He tends to say things before he thinks. This is what led Lane to being the Sea Storm outcast from the get go. He is tired of staying at a cheap motels and eating vending machine food. He wants a roommate, real food and to be part of his team. In order to achieve this he decides to take on the veteran opponent Jared Shore. Jared is known as one of the Rebel’s fighters. This was not a great decision on Lanes part but it ends up getting the respect of his teammates. Therefore, he thinks it’s totally worth it. He has one more night at the Econo Lodge. He is starving goes to the bar across street in search of food. This is where he runs into Jared Shore once again.
Jared Shore is 31 years old and a veteran in hockey’s minor league. He loves hockey but has lost the love of the game. He is known as the teams fighter and has been traded more time than he wants to count. It’s nothing new when the Sea Storms Rookie decides he has something to prove to his team and thinks a fight with Jared will be the way to do it. This irritates Jared even though he would never say as much. There is a lot more to Jared than he reveals to his teammates or coach.
When Lane spots Jared at the bar he is thrown off kilter. He is extremely attracted to Jared. They start talking and Lane realizes that once he got around the threatening looks and a bit of attitude Jared was a really nice guy.
Jared cant believe how weird Lane is. Yeah Lane is gorgeous but the things that come out of his mouth are so bizarre and unfiltered that in some strange way made Jared like him more. They end up hooking up that night. Jared leaves early the next morning feeling good but a little off as well. He has sworn off relationships for years but being around Lane make him question his decision. But how would it ever work? They are rival teams and different stages in their careers.
I loved breakaway by Avon Gale. The writing flowed well and kept my attention the entire time. The scenes and characters were vividly detailed. I adore both Lane and Jared. They completed each other, which made their lives turn out in ways they never thought possible. I loved Lane and the things that would pop out of his mouth were priceless. The sex scenes were hot. The secondary characters brang a lot to the story. I’m hoping to see a few of their stories in the future
If you like a m/m story that is centered around sports then I highly recommend reading Breakaway by Avon Gale.
Avon Gale was once the mayor on Foursquare of Jazzercise and Lollicup, which should tell you all you need to know about her as a person. She likes road trips, rock concerts, drinking Kentucky bourbon and yelling at hockey. She’s a displaced southerner living in a liberal midwestern college town, and she never gets tired of people and their stories — either real or the ones she makes up in her head. .
