Do You Like it in Public or Private?

Exhibitionism and voyeurism are two popular themes in BDSM novels. The BDSM community in reality is much freer overall. Not just in a sexual way, but in an all-around open and giving way. Of course, if you stop and think about it, being willing to share your sexuality in public is an incredibly giving thing to do. Scary, but generous. As far as voyeurism goes, the fact that the porn industry is so huge speaks to its popularity.

Going to a professional dungeon or private dungeon party can be a great way to experience both sexual and non-sexual BDSM practices – even if you’re only there to observe and nothing else. Of course, it’s a good idea to go with someone you trust or feel comfortable with if you’ve never been. Finding a place that’s been recommended is a smart idea too.

Everyone’s comfort level is different. Going to a dungeon or watching a demonstration can be intimidating at first. Being clear with yourself as to what your boundaries are before you go is a huge must. Emotions, stress, fear, excitement – all those things can influence your reaction to something new, especially if it’s unexpected. I’d like to think it goes without saying, but just in case, mind-altering substances are not to be included in the evening’s fun.

So – do you like it in public or private? Asking yourself whether watching someone have sex in front of you would turn you on, freak you out or make you faint from embarrassment is an excellent starting place. If you’re at the ‘fainting from embarrassment’ stage just from watching, skip the whole ‘having sex in front of people’ portion of our quiz. You’ll probably have to work up to that.

Or not. There are plenty of people who are completely open about either participating in or watching non-sexual BDSM scenes in front of strangers, but would never cross the line where sex was added to the scene. If nothing else, a BDSM erotic romance novel can provide you with your cake and a fork to eat it with. You don’t even have to worry about whether or not you can have a glass of wine.

In Building Bonds, the first book in the Kiss of Leather series, Kyle is absolutely terrified at the prospect of going to a dungeon. He’s not even worried about how he feels about having sex in public since he knows there’s not the slightest chance he’d ever do such a thing. He’s just so shy in general. His fear of being in a dungeon is one of the first boundaries Master Gavin pushes with him. It’s important that Kyle moves past that fear. It would make their lives together so much easier since Kyle’s the exclusive builder for all the dungeon furniture at the Kiss of Leather club. In the following excerpt, Kyle’s worried he’ll have to call red before ever even setting foot inside a dungeon for the first time.

Kiss of Leather series (Book #1)

Kyle’s a natural sub who builds dungeon furniture, yet has no interest in BDSM. It takes a hunky Dom to show him just what he’s been missing.

After Kyle’s partner of five years leaves him for another man on the night of their housewarming party, the shy,

early-thirties carpenter needs to do a major reassessment of his life in addition to raising some serious cash. With no one to help him pay the lease on his Los Angeles condo, he worries how he’ll survive. His best friend sets up a meeting with one of the Doms and partners at Kiss of Leather, a gay BDSM club being built as a premier destination for those who want the best of the best.

Master Gavin not only wants the best—he demands it. When he meets Kyle, he assumes that part of the builder’s reticence to share anything personal with him must be due to his experiences with an abusive former Master. Not one to back down from a challenge, Gavin determines to break through the walls surrounding the beautiful man he can’t get out of his mind. He’s hopeful that once he convinces Kyle to sign an initial contract, Kyle might be the first sub to open up his heart.

Misunderstandings and accusations almost destroy everything between them before they have a real chance to begin. However, the true obstacle becomes not only whether Kyle will embrace BDSM as a lifestyle, but also whether he can handle a full-time D/s relationship with a big, bad, scary Dom who’s as sexy as hell.

Excerpt from Building Bonds:

An impeccably attired valet approached them, his tuxedo one of the nicest Kyle had ever seen. Kyle held back a burst of hysterical laughter that threatened to escape. Logically he realized they were at a BDSM club. He knew there’d be naked men on leashes, ones tied up and getting whipped, public sex actsbut he had the bizarre impression he was attending an official state dinner or royal gathering.

After they’d exited Gavin’s Ferrarithe car he only drove on special occasionsGavin reached into his suit coat to retrieve the club collar he would buckle around Kyle’s neck. His first reaction to the leather item when they’d used it at home for training was that it seemed weird. After he’d worn it a few timesGavin working with him and practicing with the leashit’d been sad when Gavin would remove it.

Maybe I would want that whole collaring thing someday after all.

He swallowed, pushing yet another unsettling thought from his mind. He had enough to contend with as it was.

Gavin put the collar on him, the sensation of Gavin’s strong fingers working the leather piece around his neck dropping him into a submissive state. Gavin then clipped on his leash, locking gazes before he kissed him, quick but thorough.

“Eyes lowered like we practiced. Once inside, I’ll unclip you so that you can go to the changing area and get out of your street clothes. Jordan has reserved us a spot, so once you’ve finished, ask the attendant to escort you to Master James’ table.”

“Oh Jesus.” He hadn’t meant to say it out loud, but it had flown out before he could stop it.

Gavin let go of the leash then stepped back. It dangled there and Kyle stared at the loop at the end of the leather strip dangling against his thigh. Gavin had just had his hand through it, an extension of himself, a way of keeping Kyle safe in his care.

“It’s the leash.”

“You don’t like the leash?”

“Actually, it’s the opposite. I don’t want to be unclipped. I’ll be wandering around by myself while you’re somewhere else. You won’t be holding on to me.”

“Hmm. I see.” Gavin paused, but Kyle kept his gaze lowered. He didn’t dare screw up before they’d even set foot in the club. At last, Gavin spoke. “But you’ll have my collar still. You won’t be left alone, won’t be wandering around. As I explained before, the collar is a clear statement to everyone inside that you belong to someone, that you aren’t to be approached at all in any way.” Gavin paused again. “How about if I lead you over to the changing area, introduce you to the attendant and request that he wait right there for you?”

It seemed reasonable. He’d made it as far as the club. He thought he could do it.
